Day 2: Vienna (overnight in Vienna)
This city is the cultural hotspot of Austria! It is in Vienna where eastern and western European tradition unites, creating a unique mixture of art and culture. There’s lots to see, but here are just a few sightseeing points: the “Hofburg”, a former imperial residence; the “Schweizer Hof” where there’s a gothic castle chapel and a treasure chamber; and, “Schloss Schönbrunn”, with its sculpted gardens and the “Tiergarten Schönbrunn”, the oldest zoo in the world. Take in the Ferris wheel at the Prater amusement park, and visit the nearby more modern pieces of Viennese culture such as the Danube Tower, the Hundertwasserhaus, and the “Millennium Tower”.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided city tour Vienna
- specialty tour(s) of attractions in the city (e.g. the Hofburg)
Day 3: Vienna – Salzburg (overnight in Salzburg) (daily distance 300 km)
Travel to Salzburg today and visit the birthplace and residence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – be sure to take the opportunity to taste “Mozartkugeln”, a unique confection of marzipan, nougat and chocolate. But there is more to this city than just Mozart; don’t miss Hohensalzburg Castle (situated at the top of the fortress mountain in the centre of the city), the “DomQuarter Salzburg, or the brew house “Stiegl Brauwelt”.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided city tour of Salzburg
- specialty tour(s) of attractions in the city (e.g. “The Sound of Music” tour)
Day 4: Salzburg – Munich (overnight in Munich) (daily distance: ca 150 km)
Today you’ll change countries, driving north into Germany with Munich as your destination. The “Alter Peter” (“Old Peter”) is a church in the historic centre, with the city’s oldest towers, clock, and bell. From here you’ll get the best view of the Bavarian capital and, if you’re lucky, the distant Alps. Visit the “Marienplatz”; the “Frauenkirche”; the “Deutsches Museum”; the “English Garden”; the “Residenz”; and, Munich’s famous Olympic Park. The list goes on and on. Situated a little outside of the city is Nymphenburg Palace, former residence of the heads of European Empires. And perhaps you would like a nice relaxing dinner at the famous “Hofbräuhaus”.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided city tour of Munich
Day 5: Munich – Bolzano (overnight in Bolzano) (daily distance 280 km)
Today head south towards “La Bella Italia” where you’ll visit the smaller, but pleasant city of Bolzano, capital of the province of South Tyrol. Prior to the end of WWI, this city was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and today it is a mixture of Italian- and German-speaking peoples, so you will hear these two languages being spoken wherever your steps take you. Be sure to see the “Ötzimuseum” with the naturally mummified remains of a man who lived around 3,300 BC. Visit the “Dominican Church and St. John's Chapel”, and the Franciscan Monastery. Surrounded by fine 17th-century town houses, relax in Piazza Walther, the town’s central square, and from where, on the northern side, the main shopping street “Via dei Portici” begins. On the outskirts of the city in a medieval castle you’ll find the centerpiece of a string of mountain-themed museums created by Reinhold Messner, the famous climber from South Tyrol, and you can visit the “Monumento della Vittoria”, erected under the personal orders of Mussolini following the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy at the end of WWI.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided city tour of Bolzano
Day 6: Bolzano – through the Dolomites – Venice (overnight in Venice) (daily distance 270 km)
Today enjoy more time exploring the city, perhaps having lunch in the brew pub “Bozner Brau Hopfen and Co.” near the “Piazza delle Erbe” - choose some of typical plain local fare from its menu. When you’re ready, begin your journey from Bolzano to Venice through what UNESCO has described as “… some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs, and a high density of narrow, deep, and long valleys.” It’s a drive of over 5 hours, not including the stopovers (only a few of which we mention here), so be sure to leave yourself enough time. At “Welschnofen” you’ll have a wonderful view of the “Rosengarten”. Stop at “Lake Carezza” for an amazingly blaze of color and the magnificent mountain panorama of the Latemar! “Passo Pordoi” offers a beautiful view of the “Marmolada”, the “Rosengarten” and the “Sassolungo”. “Passo di Falzarego” is a great stop for visiting a museum and battlefields of WWII. From here drive down the valley to Cortina d’Ampezzo, which marks the finish of the so-called “Dolomite Road”, but your trip continues through amazing alpine landscapes all the way to Venice.
X-Large Travel Tip: While you can travel by train between cities for the rest of the tour, for the day trip between Bolzano and Venice a vehicle will be required, either a rental car if you choose to go on your own, or perhaps a minivan if you travel with a guide.
Day 7: Venice (overnight in Venice)
Ah Venice – the Bride of the Sea! There’s so much to see here, but a few things to mention are “Piazza San Marco”, the “Goldoni Theater”, Marco Polo's house, the “Convent of San Zaccaria”, and “Doge's Palace” with the cell of Casanova. Try not to miss the mosaics and artworks at St. Mark's Basilica and the spectacular view of St. Mark's Square from its 2nd level terrace. Walking through the alleys and bridges of Venice gives you a unique sensation and there are so many possibilities for a delicious lunch and dinner -- it would be a shame to be in this seaside city and not try the local fish dishes! And even more of a shame not to try a gondola ride!!
X-Large Extras*:
- guided city tour of Venice
- gondola ride on the canals of Venice
- guided tours of the lagoons and/or surrounding islands
Day 8: Venice – Verona – Milan (overnight in Milan) (daily distance 290 km)
From Venice, head west, stopping in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet! You’ll be able to visit the world-famous balcony of Giulietta Capuleti (aka Juliet), but don’t be surprised that it’s not overlooking a large courtyard -- Romeo’s declaration of love took place in much more intimate circumstances. And while you’re in Verona, try to take in the ancient “Arena di Verona”, one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in existence and today the unconventional opera house in Verona, staging musical spectacles in June and July with seating for up to 15,000 people. Continue west to Milan.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided tour of Verona
Day 9: Milan (overnight in Milan)
Today visit Milan, Italy's fashion capital. If you wish, take a guided tour of the city – you’ll still have plenty of time for shopping. A visit to the “Duomo di Milano” (Milan Cathedral) in the city’s centre, the museum, and the “Galleria Vittorio Emanuale II are an absolute must! Check out what’s playing at La Scala if you’re an opera fan. And there’s “Via Torino” and “Castello Sforzesco” in the huge “Parco Sempione”, also very beautiful places to visit. Go window-shopping in Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the oldest shopping malls in the world, or take a walk through Milan’s Chinatown, the oldest and largest Chinese community in Italy.
X-Large Extras*:
- guided tour of Milan
- specialty tours (e.g. the Duomo di Milano)
Day 10: Departure
Depending on the departure time, transfer from your hotel to the airport near Milan (Malpensa) and fly homeward. You’ll have plenty to reflect upon during the journey, both on things that you did, and on things that you should have done. But don’t worry. You’ll be back!
